How
and when will the plan be implemented?

The
Future
Today! Several key 2010 Vision Plan initiatives are already
underway:
A
Consolidated
Government District
The Mayor spearheaded a plan to consolidate
city and county facilities in the government district. The master
plan also addresses how to make Trade Street a great, walkable,
civic street.
A New Neighborhood
A master plan to redevelop the Second Ward
into a new neighborhood begins next year. In addition to several
hundred new housing units, the neighborhood will have its own shops,
a park and a new school. Existing government buildings in this area
will be relocated to a consolidated government district.
An
Urban Village Community workshops
have been conducted to solicit ideas to redevelop more than 18 acres
of city and county land on North Tryon Street. Hunter Interests
has been hired to help select a developer who will create a high-density,
mixed-use urban village with an arts and cultural focus. Future
buildings will serve as a signature gateway into center city from
the north.
A High-Density, Mixed-Use Center The
city is negotiating with LCOR, a national development and investment
company, to redevelop the former convention center sitelocated
on the trolley line in the core of center cityinto a high density
center with office, hotel, retail and residential uses.
A Central Park City
planners have begun to establish criteria for the development of
a new central park in the center city.
Catalyst Projects Efforts
are underway to finance and build a new entertainment arena for
the NBA Charlotte Hornets, a baseball stadium for the AAA Charlotte
Knights, and a children's theater and library. Plans also include
the relocation of the Mint Museum of Art to center city and the
restoration of the Carolina Theatre.
