A
New Vision for Center City Charlotte
In March
1999, Charlotte Center City Partners, in collaboration with the City of
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, began working on a new master plan for
the Center City called the Charlotte Center City 2010 Plan. The plan is a guide for future growth and development,
addressing key issues
such as housing, retail, sports and entertainment facilities, and parks, and how these issues
can make the Center City a better place to live, work, shop and play.
A number of
plans have been developed for Charlotte's Center City over the past 30
years, progressively guiding the area's growth and development. The last
planning effort, undertaken in 1990, outlined the vision that guided
steady growth and development of new office towers, the First Ward, the
Trolley Corridor, Ericsson Stadium, restaurants and housing.
Building on
past planning efforts, the 2010 Vision Plan redefines the vision for the
region's center of commerce and outlines what efforts should be undertaken
to ensure its livability and viability in the coming decade.
Why did we
produce a plan?
-
To build
upon Charlotte's extensive area planning tradition;
-
-
To enhance
Center City identity as a strong, vibrant and healthy area;
-
-
To provide
guidance for the Center City's rapid growth and development;
-
-
To advise
the city and county governments, in addition to private interests,
regarding new developments;
-
-
To
incorporate the community's ideas about Center City development;
-
-
To
recommend a direction for Center City's future.
Who
participated in preparing the 2010 Vision Plan?
How did the
2010 Vision Plan involve the people of Charlotte?
Public input
was crucial to the project's success. The mission was to provide a clear
and compelling design and development vision for our city's urban core.
What citizens said about how the center city and its surrounding
neighborhoods should grow was important in developing a vision plan that
reflects the unique character that defines Charlotte.
